Most people visit Shibuya for its energy – crowded crossings, shopping streets, and the constant movement that has made the district famous around the world. Few would think to enter Hikarie, a modern commercial complex connected directly to the station, in search of a deeper introduction to Japanese culture. Yet hidden within its upper floors, D&DEPARTMENT and the D47 Museum offer exactly that.
Rather than presenting Japan through famous landmarks or historical spectacles, the project brings together the stories of all 47 prefectures through the values, traditions, and ways of living that continue to shape everyday life. What draws me back is not simply the exhibitions themselves, but the way the space encourages a different way of looking. It reminds us that culture is often found in the details people live with every day, and that understanding a place begins with paying attention to how it is shaped, cared for, and passed on.

The experience extends beyond the museum itself. Nearby, d47 Shokudo approaches food with the same philosophy, serving regional dishes from across Japan and offering another way to experience the country’s diversity. Together, the museum and restaurant create a thoughtful introduction to Japan that feels surprisingly at home in one of Tokyo’s busiest districts.
